SAG-AFTRA joined PowHer N.Y. and the Women’s Caucus of the New York City Council on March 15 to mark Equal Pay Day at a rally on the steps of City Hall. March 15 is the symbolic date when full-time working women’s wages equal the wages earned by full-time working men in the prior year. Attendees wore red to represent the salaries of women being “in the red” compared to men.
This year’s rally focused on the passage of the wage transparency law in New York City, which, effective May 15, 2022, requires employers with four or more workers in New York City to post the minimum and maximum salary range for any job within the city. The law aims to help alleviate sex-based wage disparities by establishing a level field for pay practices.
SAG-AFTRA members and staff attended in solidarity. SAG-AFTRA New York Local Executive Director Rebecca Damon gave remarks, noting that, “As we look toward a recovery, now is our opportunity to create a moment of transformation and to build a more fair, equitable world for everyone. Whether it’s the passage of New York City’s wage transparency law or joining a union, we all have a role to play.”
