Yesterday, the California State Senate approved Senate Bill 799, which would make striking workers in the state eligible to receive unemployment benefits. The bill now goes to Gov. Newsom for his signature.

Greedy studio heads said when the strike first began that their strategy would be to refuse to negotiate until they essentially starve workers into submission, so that multibillion-dollar corporations can continue to underpay and exploit them. SB 799 would provide a lifeline for these workers, allowing them to survive until they can secure a fair deal. This would mirror existing law in New York and New Jersey, where striking workers are already eligible for unemployment benefits.

This is where you come in. It’s not at all certain that Gov. Newsom will sign the bill, and he needs to hear from you about why it’s so important that he does. Tell the governor he needs to support organized labor and sign SB 799. Whether it’s members of SAG-AFTRA and the WGA, or exploited workers in other industries who are standing up for basic fairness, we are all in the fight of our lives.

Every voice matters and time is of the essence.

Please take a moment right now to let Gov. Newsom know how important this bill is to SAG-AFTRA members and all the working people of California.
