Robert De Niro is a man best known for the characters he’s portrayed on the silver screen: the head of a Mafia crime syndicate; a taxi driver with a skewed moral compass; a boxer battling his personal demons outside the ring; and most recently, “the Irishman” himself, the late Frank Sheeran. However, while De Niro’s acting has made him a household name for audiences and a respected figure among his peers and contemporaries, he has excelled in many off-screen roles as well: as director, producer, philanthropist and outspoken unionist.

In this interview, filmed weeks after he received the 56th SAG Life Achievement Award in January 2020, De Niro discusses his career with SAG-AFTRA President Gabrielle Carteris. Humble and reflective, he recounts his work with director Martin Scorsese throughout the decades, as well as his recent partnership with streaming giant Netflix, philanthropic efforts and the ways he continues to evolve as an actor.
