LOS ANGELES (Aug. 13, 2009) --- The following is a statement from AFTRA National President Roberta Reardon regarding the last taping of the longest running daytime drama, “Guiding Light,” which took place Tuesday, Aug. 11.

“After 72 years of entertaining America, ‘Guiding Light’ is bowing with the grace and dignity that has carried the show through seven decades, providing thousands of jobs for our members over that time, as well as members of our sister unions.

“Along the way, ‘Guiding Light,’ which started on radio in 1937, made history, from its smooth transition from radio to TV in 1952 to its many Daytime Emmy Award honors and even getting into the Guinness Book of World Records for being the longest-running soap opera in production and the longest-running drama in TV and radio history.

“On behalf of the 70,000 members of AFTRA, we salute ‘Guiding Light’ and its cast.”
