Dear Member,
As you may have heard, we lost one of the greats over the weekend, country music legend Jean Shepard. Jean has been a member of the union since 1967 and was a member of the Grand Ole Opry for more than 60 years. She appeared on the show into her 80s and was the longest-running member of the Opry at the time of her death. Jean was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2011.
Jean can certainly be considered a pioneer and icon for women in country music. She was arguably country music’s first feminist and paved the way for women to pursue their own career. The same doors she opened for Loretta and Patsy are still being used today by Miranda and Carrie.
A celebration of life for Jean will take place this Friday at 1 p.m. at the Hendersonville Funeral Home, East Main St., Hendersonville. The public is invited to attend.
Many of our local members have cherished memories of Jean. While this is a great loss to the country music community, Jean’s legacy will live on.
In unity,
Mike Montgomery
