The Lyric Opera Orchestra strike is over! Now it’s time to get back to the opera.
SAG-AFTRA Chicago Local members joined more than 50 members of various unions in solidarity with the Chicago Lyric Opera Orchestra at its strike rally on Oct. 12 in Daley Plaza. The Orchestra, part of the Chicago Federation of Musicians (CFM), went on strike Oct. 9 to seek a fair contract from the Lyric management.
SAG-AFTRA Chicago Local Singers Committee Co-Chair Joe Wright served as the rally’s master of ceremonies. Wright said he was “glad to participate and be of service to our striking brothers and sisters of the CFM. Solidarity and unity is what we should be about today. Thanks for the opportunity and wonderful experience.”
CFM President Terryl Jares extended thanks to the union community for their commitment to the cause.
“The support and solidarity of our Chicago union community was overwhelming and very much appreciated during this difficult time. We are pleased that with everyone’s help we were able to reach an acceptable conclusion,” Jares said. “The Chicago Federation of Musicians and the Lyric Opera Orchestra were extremely grateful to SAG-AFTRA for their support and to member Joe Wright for his spectacular job of introducing the guest speakers.”
The Lyric Opera Orchestra has been part of a legendary trio in Chicago for more than 64 years: a world-class orchestra playing with a world-class opera company in a world-class city. The orchestra consists of dedicated professionals who are proud of the beautiful music that they create together and are proud of their legacy, the outreach and education that they provide to audiences worldwide, and being union members.
Congratulations to the Chicago Lyric Opera Orchestra and the CFM on negotiating a fair and equitable contract with the Lyric management!
