On March 1, more than 30 Chicago Local members and staff volunteered at the Chicago Greater Food Depository. During their two-and-a-half-hour repacking shift, the group sorted, inspected and packed donated food into smaller quantities and handled 9,480 pounds of food — the equivalent of 7,900 meals.
The Greater Chicago Food Depository is a nonprofit food distribution and training center that fights hunger throughout Cook County. The GCFD distributes donated and purchased food through a network of 700 food pantries, soup kitchens community programs and shelters serving more than 800,000 adults and children yearly.
If you weren’t able to volunteer with SAG-AFTRA, don’t worry; we will be doing more in the future. In the meantime, please consider donating non-perishable food to the CGFD or volunteer.
