Our first Coffee Connection — a new program for members to connect with each other in different coffee shops — in Royal Oak on Oct. 18 was enlightening, productive and motivating. A cross section of our membership was represented, from veteran broadcasters and actors to brand-new union members. We enjoyed meeting one another, telling our stories and sharing how each deals with the changes and challenges in our industry, specifically here in Michigan. We had a lengthy discussion about social media and how best to use it to promote ourselves, generate work and stay connected professionally. It was suggested that we follow up with a conservatory session (aka professional development).

Because our membership is so spread out geographically, it is the board’s intention to host these coffee connections not only in Metro Detroit but in regions across the state. And these coffee connections don’t have to be hosted by a board member. You can host one in your neighborhood. It’s our union. It’s our work.

Stay tuned for more Coffee Connections. I’ll leave you with this, a quote from a newbie, P.J. Edwards, who got his SAG-AFTRA card last February:

“I joined the union because I wanted to be taken seriously as an actor.”

Right on!
