Labor leaders share their thoughts on how technological advancements will change society’s understanding of work.

Regardless of a worker’s status … everyone should have equal rights to labor protections and guaranteed social protections. Workers should be at the table, shaping the policies, systems and technologies that impact their lives.

SAG-AFTRA, in partnership with the AFL-CIO, UNITE HERE and the American Federation of Teachers, hosted the Technology Transformation & the Future of Workers fireside chat on Jan. 6 in Las Vegas. The event took place as part of the fourth Labor Innovation & Technology Summit, a yearly event where labor leaders and subject-matter experts convene to discuss the impact of technology on the workforce.

SAG-AFTRA Executive Vice President Ben Whitehair, AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler and Ford Foundation Vice President, U.S. Programs Sarita Gupta were featured panel speakers, with Mansueto Ventures Chief Executive Officer & Chief Content Officer Stephanie Mehta serving as moderator.

The panel focused on the ways the automation of work and the increased presence of AI technology continues to reshape labor. The conversation covered a range of topics: how technology is disrupting labor in a multitude of industries, including entertainment and media; the harm surveillance technology poses to workers; and how the labor movement can capitalize on the renewed interest in unions.

This panel was later aired as part of the SAG-AFTRA President’s Task Force on Education, Outreach & Engagement’s programming. More videos can be found on sagaftra.org/videos.
