SAG-AFTRA Foundation VO Lab's Commercial Workout

Practice reading commercial copy and get helpful adjustments from our VO Lab engineer/booth director and your VO Lab peers.  Be ready to offer constructive feedback and support the learning process. VO Lab workout groups are a great way to fine tune your craft and have some fun hearing different perspectives on your takes. Copy will be provided by the VO Lab.

REQUIREMENTS

  • If you are completely new to voiceover, you must complete the VO Lab's Beginner Bundle: Introduction to Commercial VO Workouts class before attending The VO Lab's Commercial Workout.  Beginner Bundle classes are posted at different times during the month just like our other classes.,  so check the Program Calendar regularly.  
  • Participant must be present for the enitire program (Noon - 3 p.m. PT / 3-6 p.m. ET)

SAG-AFTRA Foundation: Conversational Storytelling Through Commercial Structures with Hugh P. Klitzke

Even when their talents are being used to “sell soap,” actors must always understand the story they are telling. In this class industry veteran Hugh Klitzke will teach you to clearly recognize the storytelling devices commonly written into commercial copy. Understanding these devices will lead to  commercial reads that sound genuine, not-announcery and conversational. For anyone looking to improve their commercial reads this class is not to be missed!

REQUIREMENTS

Copy will be distributed the day of the event. Students are expected to familiarize themselves with the copy before class. This session will be part lecture and the instructor will work with a few volunteers. Not every attendee will read. Students are expected to stay for the duration of the session. Program begins at 2 p.m. PT / 5 p.m. ET.

BIO

Hugh P. Klitzke is a voiceover coach, director and producer in New York City.  He teaches the conversational read, self-direction, the commercial read, and directs auditions.  For nearly fifteen years Hugh was the Voiceover Studio Manager at Buchwald, New York. To date, Hugh has directed over 125,000 auditions and counting.  Along with private coaching and teaching classes he is writing two books. One compiles the ideas he explored in his blog, the other is on the conversational read. His latest interview was on the podcast Voice Acting with Veronica Barrera. SAG-AFTRA Foundation: Hillary Huber's Your Audiobook Demo: How to Make it Great!

So you want to create an Audiobook demo.  That is great news, but you have questions like... How long should it be? What should it include? What SHOULDN’T it include? Where do I find copy? Where should I submit it? These questions and more will be answered! Also performance tips and a few attendees will get an opportunity to read and be directed.

INSTRUCTOR BIO

Hillary Huber

After many years as a VO talent with hundreds of commercials and promos to her credit, Hillary shifted her acting focus to narration. She now has a flourishing audiobook career with over 600 titles recorded and is a multiple Audie Finalist, Earphone and SOVAS awards recipient. In addition to narrating, Hillary also directs audiobooks and coaches new narrators. She has a BA in English Literature and is a voracious reader and listener of audiobooks. Raised in conservative Connecticut and hippy Hawaii, Hillary now splits her time between Santa Monica and NY. Most of that time is spent in a small 4x4 cell… er booth.

SAG-AFTRA Foundation: Audiobook Workout

If you are about to narrate your first audiobook or already have a few completed audiobooks to your name, this workout provides you an opportunity to work with your fellow performers and have some fun in a supportive space.  It  is all about sharing your creative ideas with the group and getting some instant feedback on your work for our instructor.  It is important that you read through your material before you arrive at the workout.

Class takes place from 1:30-4:30 p.m. PT / 4:30 - 7:30 p.m. ET

REQUIREMENTS

Two (2) FICTION (no children's books, self-help books, instruction manuals; etc.) book excerpts (that you are familiar with), each no less than 2 minutes in length (time yourself when practicing before the workout).  

If you are completely new to audiobook narration (have never done audiobook narration) try the Beginner Bundle: Intro to Audiobook Workouts class before registering for this offering.  

The Lab will not provide reading materials.

SYNOPSIS

The audition is not only how one prepares the material. It is also about the mindset actors have about auditioning, how they conduct themselves in the room and how they let it go. This session will cover the many ways actors can prepare mentally, physically and psychologically for the audition.

Small Group Sessions are facilitated discussions with the goal of digging deeper into some of the information and advice shared within the panels. These sessions provide a time to break down concepts into practical action items by which an actor can individually apply to their professional pursuits. This session will last for 1.5 - 2 hours. There are many areas an actor can pursue within the entertainment industry. By taking the time to narrow down what an actor really wants to focus on it can free them up to deepen their pursuit of job opportunities. In this session, we will examine the different ways an actor can focus their career goals and discuss how one can create a system by which to effectively target the industry professionals within that area.

Performer Town Hall for Dubbing Agreement

SAG-AFTRA is working towards updating the SAG-AFTRA Dubbing Agreement and seeks member feedback. At the town hall, we will be going over preliminary bargaining survey results and will review potential changes for the new agreement. This agreement, with your input, is very important and will affect all actors who work in anime, live-action, and other foreign language dubbing projects. 

Due to technological restrictions, only the first 1000 registered attendees will be admitted into the Zoom. We highly encourage registering early to ensure that you have a spot.
