Portland Local President Michelle Damis and Local Secretary Chrisse Roccaro attended the Oregon AFL-CIO’s biennial convention in March.
The convention kicked off with a Democratic primary gubernatorial debate that Damis moderated.
Roccaro, who also serves as the Local’s representative to the Oregon AFL-CIO’s General Board, and Damis discussed many issues affecting SAG-AFTRA members with other attendees, including AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler and Oregon Sens. Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden.
“I learned about many different issues that affect our union family and felt the solidarity available to tap into as a union member,” Damis said about the gathering.
Roccaro also served on the convention’s Resolutions Committee, and Damis made quite a splash when she made a motion on the floor striking offensive language from the union vocabulary. The motion passed unanimously.
“On behalf of actors from around the world,” Damis said, “the words ‘bad actor’ have been struck from policy language and hereinafter the term ‘greed weasel’ shall be used instead. You’re welcome!”
