Los Angeles (August 23, 2005) ---Screen Actors Guild President Melissa Gilbert today issued the following statement upon learning of the death of 1990 Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award recipient Brock Peters:
“On behalf of the 120,000 members of Screen Actors Guild, our heartfelt sympathy and prayers go to the family of Brock Peters. His remarkable body of acting work and dedication as a civil rights activist will never be forgotten.”
Peters made his movie debut in 1954’s Carmen Jones and went on to appear in such features as Porgy and Bess, To Kill a Mockingbird and The Pawnbroker. He also performed regularly on stage (received a Tony nomination for his role in Lost in the Stars) and television, where he won an Emmy Award in 1982 for Voices of Our People. Along with extensive voice work, Peters appeared on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
In 1990, upon receiving his Life Achievement Award, Mr. Peters said: “I have lived a life of amazement, sorrows, and glories. I could bemoan all of the barriers and difficulties I have experienced and fought over the years, but I have been extremely fortunate in my life to find friends who have gathered around me in the times of greatest need or who were just there to be helpful or to seek help from me or to just be friends. They are part of my extended family. Today I know my family is even greater. You (Screen Actors Guild members) are all part of my extended family.”
