On March 8, 2025, colleagues, friends, family and union members gathered to celebrate the life and legacy of John Henning by dedicating the SAG-AFTRA New England Boardroom in his name. An icon of Boston’s broadcast community, Henning’s career as a television anchor and reporter spanned more than 45 years at WGBH, WNAC, WCVB and WBZ.
An AFTRA member and elected leader for over four decades, Henning served on the National Board and Boston Local Board, was a founding member of the National Broadcast Steering Committee, and a member of the Massachusetts Broadcasters Hall of Fame. A highly respected journalist and stalwart unionist, he was a trusted voice, providing leadership and inspiration in the boardroom and at the negotiating table.
The event brought together extended and close family members, colleagues and friends, who shared heartfelt stories about working with Henning and the impact he had on their lives. The gathering was filled with warmth, laughter and fond memories, as attendees reminisced about his humor, generosity, and unwavering dedication to his craft and community. Refreshments and snacks were shared and a slideshow of memorable photos ran as attendees reflected on his legacy in both journalism and union service. Thank you to all who joined us in celebrating Henning’s achievements, both on and off air.
