Dear Member,
I had a completely different email prepared to talk about career resources, but we're at a new turning point.
We have weathered so many storms on so many levels, and the caliber of our members is so extraordinary and our members' resilience is unsurpassed. This union will always be here for us because we are the union.
If you need help because of Hurricane Ida, I want to make sure you are aware of the resources available to you through the SAG-AFTRA Foundation and other entities.
* American Red Cross Open Shelters. Anyone in the affected area that needs a safe place to stay should call 211, visit redcross.org, call 1-800-RED CROSS (800-733-2767) or download the free Red Cross Emergency app for shelter locations. You can also text LASHELTER to 898-211 or NOLAREADY to 77295.
* FEMA Louisiana Hurricane Ida. Federal assistance is available to eligible individuals and families affected by this disaster.
* SAG-AFTRA Foundation Disaster Relief. The SAG-AFTRA Foundation and the Motion Picture Players Welfare Fund have activated our Disaster Relief Fund for SAG-AFTRA members and families impacted by Hurricane and Tropical Storm Ida. If you are a SAG-AFTRA member who has been affected, please go to sagaftra.foundation/disasterrelief for information on how to apply for emergency assistance.
As I said all during the pandemic — and now with a hurricane — we are all in this together.
Lean on each other. That’s one of our strengths. Or as our late union president, Ed Asner, said:
“The union is our way of showing we care about each other, that we believe in more than the survival of the fittest.”
We’ve got a new board and a new local president who will be seated on Sept. 2; we’ve got renewed hope at having a balanced conversation to move forward together.
It is impossible to express the honor and gratitude I feel for having been president of the New Orleans Local these many years.
In unity,
Diana Boylston, New Orleans Local President
