A course to reawaken your body and inventive spirit taxed by too many instant self tapes deadlines.


Here is a space to go slow and examine new ways to move, think, listen, and play. Try out more roles that the biz may not see you doing but can truly stretch you past typecasting.


Focus on process and the freedom to fail, get constructive feedback on experiments, stretching outside of your comfort zone, overcoming rust and a De-emphasis on Results.


Work on 1 scene and one monologue luxuriously and slowly over weeks 2-8.


Class One: Bring a NEW monologue preferably with ancestral voices and experience. Movement and vocal warm-ups. scenes and partners assigned. Suggest a type of material that would stretch you past your obvious casting or typical genre strength.


Class Two and Three: Table reads before ANY rehearsal and text analysis without self tape result speed. Bring in the event, your roles function, genre, who is the writer .


Class Four: Movement warm-up and first footings, exploring the character in body and space, exercises for personalization and being present. Monologues.


Class Five and Six: Monologues off book.  Improving the Scene. Exploring On set ways to be ready.


Class Seven to Eight: The Freedom to keep making mistakes. Fully memorized. Listening to yourself and your partner Staged with props and costumes.


Note: This is only for participants of Scene Study: From Table Read To Performance. Actors need to rehearse outside of the class to prepare scenes. This is for actors who want to have to continue to have fun and explore without judgment. Actors are encouraged to stretch with characters they may not get cast as and re-examine or revive their process with support you deserve.

Given the opportunity to express yourself, where do you stop and what do you stop yourself with? Award winning actor Karen Austin unpacks self-sabotage, your discomfort zone, the leap into strong choices, and practical techniques for delivering your best. The opposite of fear is work. There may be group exercises and a few participants may perform on-camera, time permitting.

About Karen Austin

Her career includes decades of lead roles on film, stage & TV,  LA Drama Critics Circle & Dramalogue Awards, an M.A. from Northwestern University and election to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences. She has taught at Stanford, the NY Actors Institute and the LA SAG-AFTRA Conservatory. She co-leads the Mastery of Creativity Workshop, and holds a weekly studio scene study class.

Join this fun, one-day workshop to develop usable techniques you can apply to your auditions and performances, to always know you are bringing the height of your talent to each and every opportunity, consistently. -- And learn it from a working actor who has proven these techniques across the globe in TV, Film, theater, VO and more.

 

Directions:
The first fifteen registrants will be assigned sides to work. Those registrants will be expected to come prepared with their assigned sides.

Class Two (6/25): Table reads and text analysis without self tape result speed. The event, your roles function, genre, the Writer and listening.


Class Three (7/2): Warm-up and first footings, exploring the character in body and space, personalization and being present.


Class Four (7/9): Guest Pro if available. Fully memorized. Staged with props and costume.


Class Five to Eight (7/16, 7/23, 7/30, and 8/6): Repeat with a new scene/partner.

You must have already taken Scene Study: From Table Read To Performance #1 to take this course. 


Once you were registered for the initial prerequisite course on March 1, you were automatically registered for this course.

Description:

Join Caryn West for Scene Study: From Table Read To Performance! 


Take a deep dive into 2 characters in 2 scenes, from script analysis to a full footing and guest pro giving final feedback. 


Focus on process and wonderful failures/lessons, stretching outside of your comfort zone, overcoming rust and De-emphasis on Results.


Work on 2 scenes/2 scene partners, luxuriously and slowly over 3-4 weeks.


Class One: Bring a monologue, song or dance to introduce and celebrate yourself. Movement and vocal warm-ups. Introductions and scenes assigned.


Class Two: Table reads and text analysis without self tape result speed. The event, your roles function, genre, the Writer and listening.


Class Three: Warm-up and first footings, exploring the character in body and space, personalization and being present.


Class Four: Guest Pro if available. Fully memorized. Staged with props and costume.


Class Five to Eight: Repeat with a new scene/partner.


Note: This is not a beginner course, Actors need to rehearse outside of the class to prepare scenes. This is for actors who want to have fun and explore without judgment. Actors are encouraged to stretch with characters they may not get cast as and re-examine or revive their process with support you deserve. 


Also, Caryn West can also provide quiet rehearsal  space for you and your partners in her WeHo Studio Space (90 min at a time 2 x week) upon request and an online appt. time.

This event is only open to paid-up SAG-AFTRA members in good standing (paid thru Apr. 30, 2024 or in compliance with the May 2023 COVID-19 Dues Relief Extension program). No guests are allowed. Parents/guardians of performers under 18 years old are welcome.
