Let Artists Work Act Creates More Economic Opportunity

The Let Artists Work Act (AB 437) is a California bill that would eliminate unfair, outdated contract provisions that keep actors tied to employers and unable to work for months and years at a time. Actors must often forfeit other employment opportunities, even when there is no conflict with their original employer, and this is inconsistent with the law in California for all other workers.

We NEED your SUPPORT to make it GO and urge all members to use their voices to help pass the LAW Act (AB 437).

Working actors need to work, that’s why SAG-AFTRA is sponsoring legislation, introduced by Assembly Member Ash Kalra, that will put an end to antiquated, restrictive employment provisions that keep actors in “career limbo.” The LAW Act gives artists the freedom to work and the freedom to earn a living.

Actors know that with the rise of streaming and digital platforms, everything has changed. Series seasons have dropped from an average of 24 episodes to an average of 12, falling
nearly 40% since 2009. The amount of downtime between seasons has increased from 5 months to 14 months. That’s a long time to be out of work and it has severe financial impacts on actors and their families.

Producers have moved their production and exhibition models into the 21st Century and it’s time they allow their employees to join them. Forced unemployment is unethical and outrageous..

POST ON SOCIAL: Raise Your Voice and Make the #LAWAct a Reality!

Spread the word on your socials to your colleagues, friends, and allies – and don’t forget to let your elected representatives know that you support them when they support you!

Need a little inspiration for your post? Here are five – of many! – reasons to support AB437 so we can #LetArtistsWork:

  • Actors are gig workers and must have the freedom to choose what projects they work on and when they work on them.
  • Actors, like all workers, deserve the right to work as much as they need to earn a living.
  • Forcing Actors into “career limbo” is an outdated practice that harms families and creates unnecessary financial hardships.
  • Exclusivity contracts are unfair – actors are people, not property.
  • Forced unemployment is unethical – workers must be allowed to work.
