Dear Member,
I hope this finds you well! I really do – and so you can be in touch with me about how you are and anything else on your mind, here’s my new email address: portland.president@sagaftra.org.
Our newly elected Portland Local board had its first meeting Sept. 5. It was scheduled for 1½ hours, but there was so much to cover in our first meeting that we went for 2½ hours. As I promised, we’re going to be communicating with you regularly about our work on your behalf, and reaching out to you for your input. So here are a few of the things we discussed, and actions that we implemented.
At the top of our list: We formed a Stunt Committee, co-chaired by Michelle Damis and Kirsten Foe. These two professionals will be reaching out to other members of the stunt community to join them on this committee, which will then coordinate with a regional committee covering Oregon and Washington. Coming soon: a workshop led by stunt pros and staff on stunt safety and education.
More committees will be formed and populated soon – with your help!
Next up: Save the date! On Oct. 15 we are having a membership mixer at the Lake Theater in Lake Oswego for us to mix & mingle, complete with food, beverage, and a bunch of great raffle prizes. Look for a formal invitation in a week or so. We want to see you there! Your new board will be using every available tech tool to include all Oregon and SW Washington members, including our membership mixer. We hope members in other areas will gather at the same time, so we can FaceTime everyone in to one big party.
When: 6 - 9:30 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 15
Where: Lake Theater
106 N State Street,
Lake Oswego, OR 97034
Want to organize a sister party in your area? Please let us know ASAP so that we can help make it happen!\
We had a SAG-AFTRA Foundation event, Casting Access, on Sept. 16 and Sept. 17, featuring Los Angeles casting directors Kerry Barden and Jason Kennedy, as well as local casting directors Eryn Goodman and Simon Max Hill. It was well attended and everyone we heard from (including our board members who participated) had great things to say about the weekend. Look for more events and sign up early so you don’t miss these opportunities!
Did you know you can attend a local board meeting? Well, you can! If you have something you want to talk about, or just want to learn a little more about how your union governance works, join us! Write shellea.allen@sagaftra.org to schedule. I look forward to working with you as your Local President.
In solidarity,
Robert Blanche
Portland Local President
