Portland Local members came together at Teatro Milagro’s Zocalo on Oct. 16 for the local’s fall membership meeting and Commercials Contracts wages and working conditions session.

The evening began with Local Vice President Kirsten Foe, Secretary Harold Phillips, National Board member Mary McDonald-Lewis and Local Executive Director Shellea Allen briefing the members on initiatives the Local Board is working on, as well as the status of local and national issues like organizing efforts and the BBH strike. The briefing prompted many questions from members, ranging from the challenges of organizing voiceover work to productions that are planning to shoot in the area.

After the general membership meeting concluded, Portland Local members circled up to discuss what’s working in SAG-AFTRA’s Commercials and Audio Commercials contracts and what could be improved.  Through thoughtful conversation and debate, members put together a series of proposals for consideration by the National Commercials Contracts Negotiating Committee as it prepares for negotiations with the ANA-4A’s Joint Policy Committee in 2019.

Members left Teatro Milagro that evening with a feeling of solidarity and shared purpose — a feeling that comes from working together with one’s fellow union members to identify issues and offer solutions. That feeling is available to every SAG-AFTRA member who chooses to participate in their union’s activities. Be sure your contact information is correct here and be sure to download the SAG-AFTRA app so you’re notified about the next membership meeting — and make the commitment to join your fellow SAG-AFTRA members there. You won’t be sorry!
