Actor Troy Pryor discusses ways performers and creatives can leverage their talent to build long-term success.

When we think about artists, writers and creators that have built things that last, [having] the ability to connect with [others] definitely has an impact on your artistry.

All performers are seeking ways to build long-term success in the industry. And while having talent and drive can lead to new opportunities, there are ways to take your work further and cultivate a career that aligns with your goals.

The SAG-AFTRA President’s Task Force on Education, Outreach & Engagement took the opportunity to discuss this subject with the Creating Success Beyond Your Talent livestream on April 19. Joining SAG-AFTRA Executive Vice President Ben Whitehair was producer and SAG-AFTRA member Troy Pryor. Pryor, a former Chicago Local Board member, is the founder of Creative Cypher, an organization that provides Black and brown creators access to helpful resources for their own creative projects.

The conversation between Whitehair and Pryor focused on the benefits of connecting with other creative groups and communities to further one’s career. Topics discussed included networking and mentorship.

“Oftentimes, just being present provides you an opportunity to connect with others and build relationships,” said Pryor. “You don’t have to be a mentor in the sense [you’re] always teaching; sometimes you’re the student within the same relationship … but I think that organically happens when we’re self-aware.”
