The SAG-AFTRA President’s Task Force on Education, Outreach & Engagement discussed the power and process of goal setting with life coach Beth Handel.
The point of life coaching is to honor that you gave your word to do something that's going to fulfill your dreams [and] make you happy, proud and effective [at doing so].

Life Coach
As a working performer, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed when managing your life. At times, you may even feel that while you’re seeing great progress in a part of your life, such as your career, other parts have stalled. When those moments happen, it’s time to reassess and manage your thinking.
To discuss this subject, the SAG-AFTRA President’s Task Force on Education, Outreach & Engagement aired a livestream, Big Break or Huge Mistake? Disruptive Creative Career Coaching for Artists, on March 22. Hosts SAG-AFTRA Executive Vice President Ben Whitehair and National Board member Linda Powell were joined by member and SAG Awards recipient Alysia Reiner (Orange Is the New Black) and life coach Beth Handel. Handel, who is the co-founder and vice chairmen of the Handel Group, has worked as a life coach for executive professionals and public figures for 17 years.
The session began with a conversation about the effects of negative self-thinking and sabotage, and the importance of keeping promises to oneself. Reiner and Handel then turned to discussing methods for turning goals into actions. Handel’s suggestions included:
- Prioritizing the most important parts of your life. While Handel noted that there can be up to 12 aspects of a person’s life that are significant to them, including personal and professional relationships, work and health and lifestyle, focusing on what you deem important can make it easier to incorporate new habits in those areas.
- Determining specific, measurable promises. Whether great or small, every goal needs a “specific, measurable promise,” or objective, in order to achieve success. Take time to think about the best practices and consequences to adopt to best honor your promises.
- Finding an accountability buddy. Having another person, such as a life coach or close colleague, can help keep you on track towards fulfilling your goals.
