Our theme for this year’s Conservatory Intensive is “The New Normal.”

This panel will feature a plethora of talented and diverse artisans who have adapted and embraced “The New Normal.”

Diarra Kilpatrick is an actress, writer and producer. She produced, wrote and starred in the ABC web-series, American Koko (2017), for which she received a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Actress in a Short Form Comedy or Drama Series nomination. From 2020 to 2023, Kilpatrick starred in the HBO period drama series, Perry Mason. Kilpatrick created, produced and plays the leading role in the BET+ mystery comedy-drama series, Diarra from Detroit.

Jodi Long is best known for her role as Madama on Cafe Americain (1993–1994), and Ok Cha on Sullivan and Son (2012–2014), and her role in Patty Hearst (1988). She won Best Supporting Actress at the Daytime Emmy Awards for her role in the Netflix series Dash & Lily (2020).

Lizza Monet Morales is known for Phil Spector (2013), Access Hollywood (1996) and The Deported (2009).

Matt Johnson is a two-time Emmy Award winning Showrunner, Executive Producer and Writer with over three decades of experience in film, television, stage, and global live events. He served as the Showrunner and Head Writer of the acclaimed “Kitten Bowl” franchise for Hallmark Channel and Co-Executive Produced its spin-off series "Cat Bowl" for its first two seasons. In partnership with Amblin, NBC/Universal, and Toniebox, Matt recently wrote the new “Jurassic Park: Camp Cretaceous” audio-drama series, debuting in Fall 2024 – and is currently developing a new scripted early-learning franchise with the same team. Upcoming projects include Co-Showrunning several non-fiction children’s series, as well as “Tee’s Pot’s” – a feature film he created and co-wrote for Hallmark Channel celebrating adoption and Chinese tea pottery. Matt is a former chair of Diversity & Inclusion for the Producers Guild, and for the past two years has served on the Television Academy Honors Committee, recognizing programs that inspire and drive social change.

Melanie Mayron is an actress and director of film and television. Mayron is best known for her role as photographer Melissa Steadman on the ABC drama thirtysomething for which she won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series in 1989, and was nominated for the same award in 1990 and 1991. In 2018, the Santa Fe Film Festival honored Mayron for her outstanding contributions to film and television.

Wendy Kurtzman is an Emmy and Artios nominated casting director with more than 35 years of experience in feature films, movies for television, limited series, and theater. Wendy has worked with many distinguished directors such as Paul Schrader, Diane Keaton, Sally Field, and Roland Emmerich, for whom she cast the blockbuster “Independence Day.” Prior to starting her own casting business, she was a casting executive at Lifetime and NBC.

Getting Cast in Faith-Based Films

We are excited to announce that casting director Beverly Holloway, CSA, will be our SAG-AFTRA New Orleans Local Conservatory guest on Wednesday, March 26. She will provide insights on casting TV and feature film projects across multiple genres including faith-based productions. Holloway will join virtually and Local Board member and Conservatory Chair Lance Nichols will moderate with the assistance of Conservatory Vice Chair Kim Baptiste.

 

Q&A Session: You will have an opportunity to ask questions about the casting process, industry trends and personal experiences.

Doors open at 6 pm. Event begins at 6:30 pm SHARP. Reservations are required. Beverages and light refreshments will be provided.
Cost: SAG-AFTRA member fee is $10. If you are not a SAG-AFTRA member, you may attend for $20. All attendees must register below. You will be sent a link for payment in your email confirmation. There are no refunds if you cancel.

 

About the presenter: Beverly Holloway has been an independent casting director for TV and feature film for almost 30 years and is proud to be a member of The Casting Society of America. Throughout her career, Beverly has had the opportunity to work with some of the best actors in the industry across multiple genres of film including drama, comedy, family/faith, action/adventure, rom-com, thriller, sci-fi, horror and animation. Join the SAG-AFTRA LA Conservatory for John Ruby's On-Camera Drama & Comedy Class!

Students will learn how to make bold, creative choices to truly inhabit a character and bring the words on the page to life. This deep dive into emotions, relationship, obstacles, objectives will help open up the actor to spontaneity and working moment-to-moment. Putting all these tools together will allow them to book more work in television and film.

Please choose and prepare one scene as if for an audition; totally prepared, dressed for the part, off-book, and adapted for a taped audition environment. Bring two copies of the sides, one for yourself and the other highlighted for the reader. Bring a flash drive or SD card if you'd like to take the takes home with you.

Description:
Join the SAG-AFTRA LA Conservatory for Headshot Photography and Evaluation with Theo & Juliet!

In this class you'll learn: 

  • Technical basics of headshot photography.  (e.g. Focus, lighting, etc.)
  • The importance of Actor Tech (e.g. formatting)
  • General Headshot Details Discussion (e.g. wardrobe, hair and make-up)
  • Sample Evaluation of materials (e.g. a live evaluation of one man and one woman’s current headshots projected on a screen for the room to see.)
  • Difference between Headshot photography, Editorial Photography and PR Photography
  • Current world of Social Media and how it pertains to photography.
  • Followed by a Q & A

The last two hours of this course will be an optional evaluation for those who want their individual materials reviewed by Theo & Juliet in front of a class in order to be able to make improvements to their promotional image materials in the future.

Join the SAG-AFTRA LA Conservatory for Improv Comedy Class Level 1: Strong Foundations with BJ Lange!


Whether you're an actor setting your sights on joining an improv or sketch group, a performer wanting to polish your skills for commercial auditions,  OR you just want to open a door to greater creativity as a writer, director, etc., then this class is for YOU!


Air Force veteran and Second City Instructor BJ Lange brings 15 years of improv and teaching experience to lead the group in a safe and supportive setting, allowing students to grow in the advancement of their craft while building relationships and strengthening self-confidence.


What to expect in this class: 

  • A strong introduction to the ‘kitchen sink’ application of improv comedy
  • Get practice in “thinking on your feet” as a performer or public speaker
  • Learn the “rules” of comedy improv - What makes it work… or not work
  • Find new inspiration for writing and playing better characters/stories
  • Strengthen your confidence by getting comfortable with the uncomfortable
  • Lots of laughs and fun!


Directions: Please wear comfortable clothing to move in and closed toed shoes.
