The SAG Awards viewing party kicked off 2018 with a bang! More than 75 members and guests enjoyed complimentary food, drinks and swag bags filled to the brim. Thank you to the Nevada Film Office for donating several items and Tommy Rocker’s for their hospitality. Also, a special thanks to Local Vice President Dee Drenta and Board member Rusty Meyers for their leadership in making sure that everyone had a great time.

Whether it’s workplace safety or developing contracts that allow more opportunities for our members to work, our union continues to be at the forefront of change. In February, SAG-AFTRA announced the Four Pillars of Change initiative and the Code of Conduct on Sexual Harassment that identifies real solutions and actions to help members confront harassment and secure an equitable workplace. Learn more about this initiative and other news on the SAG-AFTRA website or by downloading the new SAG-AFTRA mobile app.
We have started a Nevada Local Stunt Committee. We had our first phone conference March 15, which included Cedric Jackson, director, stunts and safety. During the call, we discussed numerous issues, including imitation safety harnesses that could pose a danger to our members and the new standards and practices for stunt coordinators.
Everything we do is for the benefit of members, and we need your help to make it all happen. There is never a perfect time to get involved. Sometimes you just have to dive in. In this newsletter, you will find ways you can volunteer your time and share your expertise with others. You can do as much or as little as you want, but the main thing is to do something.
One way to stay engaged is to participate in the Conservatory. The Conservatory offers a low-cost opportunity for members to hone and develop their craft through classes and workshops. Check out From Performer to Producer on May 6 and the cold-reading workshop on May 19. Be on the lookout for email notices about other upcoming classes. I’m sure there will be something that will meet a need.
For the past five years, our staff liaison has been Julie Crane, director of locals administration. Julie’s guidance, insight and tenure with SAG-AFTRA have been a valuable asset to our local. Although Julie remains with SAG-AFTRA, our new staff liaison is Cynthia Williams, director of locals administration. Since joining SAG-AFTRA in 2013, Cynthia has held positions within the Residuals Processing and Stunts & Safety departments. In her most recent role, she conducted workshops for members, pre-members, filmmakers and university students about the benefits of SAG-AFTRA, using its low budget contracts and the online signatory process. Cynthia can be reached at cynthia.williams@sagaftra.org.
As the saying goes, “There’s so much to do and so little time,” but with your involvement and the support of our union, we’ll get there.
In solidarity,
Kim Renee
Nevada Local President
