Labor Day is one of my favorite holidays because it honors the American worker. After all, workers are the ones who keep society functioning, the ones who build the structures we use, who keep our institutions operational, who provide critical services and, of course, inform and entertain us. In short, everything that makes our lives better.
This year, we can also celebrate that the winds of change are blowing more favorably for unions, with workers increasingly taking their fates into their own hands by organizing. At the same time, public support of workers is strong, and the pandemic has changed the way many people think about labor and judge its value.
So take some time to enjoy yourself today; you’ve earned it. And when you’re done, remember that we have a lot of work to do. Let’s seize the moment and help lead and support this reinvigorated labor movement. As union members, champion collective bargaining and solidarity. Support your fellow union members and those who aspire to be union members. Don’t miss an opportunity to explain to friends, colleagues and acquaintances why unions are so important. And, of course, make sure to participate in your own union, SAG-AFTRA.
Happy Labor Day!
In solidarity,
Duncan Crabtree-Ireland
National Executive Director
