Unionism is Activism
Hello Member,
June is here and while many turn to thoughts of summer vacation we are also reminded that there is NO vacation from fighting for our rights. Unionism is activism, and our unionism has been in full swing this month.
First, I remind all of you that SAG-AFTRA will fight to protect women's right to choice and self-determination that has been recognized for decades, and will fight to support those rights for our members across the country.
June is Pride Month and while love is love all year long, this month brings us the opportunity to highlight the fight for equality for every person, regardless of gender or sexual orientation. SAG-AFTRA supports our members’ right to live honestly and genuinely and to have their voices heard and their stories told.
We marked Black Music Month and Juneteenth by celebrating Black stories and artistry. SAG-AFTRA continues to work towards an equitable industry for all, by supporting legislation such as the CROWN Act, and updating our Commercials contracts to ensure fair treatment for all performers in the hair and makeup trailer, regardless of skin tone or hair type.
Earlier this month I had the opportunity to participate in the AFL-CIO Unity Summit at their national Convention in Philadelphia, moderating a panel discussion about voter suppression. It was an incredible honor. This year’s AFL-CIO Convention was doubly significant as it also marked the first time a woman, Liz Shuler, was elected president of the AFL-CIO and a Black man, Fred Redmond, elected as Secretary-Treasurer. Representation matters, and the leadership of the largest labor organization powerfully reflects the diversity of the labor movement.
Lastly, remember that your union is shaped by your input. By now all eligible voters should have received information about voting on the new Network Television Code. Online voting is now open. Make sure you vote by 5 p.m. PT on Friday, July 8, 2022.
Forward together,
Ezra Knight
