In honor of Women’s History Month, I'd like to take this opportunity to highlight SAG-AFTRA and the number of phenomenal women who lead this organization. All three of our national officers are women, and here in the New York Local, women just slightly outnumber the men on the board, reflecting the real demographics of New York City. Today also marks Equal Pay Day, the day that on average, women’s wages catch up to the wages men earned on average in the last calendar year. It is important to note that Union Women’s Equal Pay day falls a month earlier, in February, because unions narrow the wage gap across the board.
There is lots going on this month at SAG-AFTRA. We welcome the return of the annual Mike Hodge Memorial Blood Drive for Entertainment and Media Professionals hosted by the NY Health Care Safety Net Committee in collaboration with the New York Blood Center, taking place on March 18. As a special thank you, participants in the blood drive will receive a complimentary ticket to attend a group headshot workshop in Manhattan. Details are available on our website.
Also in celebration of Women’s History Month, Women’s Arts and Media Coalition in collaboration with the New York Local Women's Committee invites SAG-AFTRA members to their free Women Arts Day event on Saturday, March 23. I hope you can join them.
Additionally, the MORE Committee will be hosting their next Member Orientation on March 26. Come learn more about your union. If you can’t make it this time, you can attend an orientation any time.
Finally, on behalf of the entire New York Local Board, I send congratulations to New York Local Vice President Jim Kerr, a New York broadcasting icon who this month celebrates 50 years waking up New York City as the morning voice of Q104.3. Jim’s dedication to his listeners is matched by his dedication to this union, and we are so proud to celebrate him and his astounding career in radio.
Forward together,
Ezra Knight
New York Local President
