2014 Membership Meeting

“If you think you are going to get your next job on your own, you are not.”

Those words of wisdom from SAG-AFTRA member and Fox-2 anchor and money reporter Murray Feldman opened SAG-AFTRA Michigan’s 2014 Annual Membership Meeting on May 5. The venue was Lawrence Technological University in Southfield, where Murray was joined by Lawrence Tech Professor and Director of Undergraduate Management Programs Karen Evans. They led a lively workshop on how performers can and should use social media to market themselves. Murray brought along some great stories from job-seekers (including the tale of a job applicant who sent a prospective employer a bean bag chair!) and reminded the crowd that 70–80 percent of all jobs are obtained through networking and follow-up.

Professor Evans tutored SAG-AFTRA members on which social media outlets to use (LinkedIn, Twitter and Instagram) and presented “blog basics.” She encouraged members to remember, “it’s not what you know. It’s who knows you and how they know you” when it comes to landing that next gig. The professor says while many people establish online profiles, only 3 out of 10 keep those profiles up to date. The workshop wrapped up with an engaging Q&A session. Thank you, Murray Feldman and Karen Evans, for making it a success!
