Dear Member,
Let me start this message by saying that my heart goes out to all of those who have been impacted by Hurricane Helene; the devastation has been heartbreaking to see. A reminder that the SAG-AFTRA Foundation has an Emergency Financial Assistance Fund for members in need, and you can help by donating here.
Now, on to some important announcements. First our new official Washington-Mid Atlantic Facebook page is up and running! Click here and like and follow us!
The page will be managed by our national office and local staff; if you have something you’d like to submit, please email wma@sagaftra.org.
Our local is beginning the work to plan for national World Pride Day. We are looking forward to as many members as possible coming out and supporting SAG-AFTRA on June 7, 2025, in this celebration of inclusivity and acceptance. While we are several months away, preparations are beginning now. If you are interested in helping our planning committee, please email wma@sagaftra.org.
I want to send a special shout-out and heartfelt thank you to our executive board members who have created our first Committee on Mental Health. Nicole Hakim Yohn, Allie McCulloch, and Gabriel Kornbluh have all done fantastic work getting this ball rolling. This is a committee for all members. The committee will focus on mental health help by offering resources and safe spaces for sharing. Be on the lookout for more details soon.
SAG-AFTRA will host its first News & Broadcast Safety Summit on Oct. 8 at 10:30 a.m.–noon PT / 1:30 - 3 p.m. ET. The virtual event was created by SAG-AFTRA Vice President, Broadcasters Bob Butler. I am honored to join Bob and National Broadcast Steering Committee Chair Cheri Preston to help facilitate this important discussion. The working environment for journalists has changed dramatically. Reporters and their crews are becoming regular targets for violence and intimidation. This virtual summit will be a gathering place for union members, journalists, station management and public safety officials to discuss how we can best inform the public and do our jobs safely. Registration is required to attend. Click here for a Zoom link.
We have a crucial election approaching. Please be sure you are registered to vote, vote early if you can! This is our right and duty as citizens of this great nation. SAG-AFTRA has voting resources and shareable content for you to help GOTV.
Everyone, please enjoy the benefits that we have fought for and take comfort in your union membership!
In solidarity,
Tracee Wilkins
Washington-Mid Atlantic Local President
