Trans performers Alexandra Grey and Ian Harvie recount their personal and professional journeys in this special podcast episode.

Had one thing gone differently, I wouldn’t be the person that I am today. I feel like I have a responsibility to represent Black trans women and I never would’ve thought that’s what God wanted me to do by just existing or sharing my story.

With entertainment and media’s efforts to be more inclusive of marginalized communities on-screen, transgender people are experiencing a level of visibility previously unseen in the industry. Shows such as Transparent, Orange Is the New Black, Pose and others have given trans performers greater opportunities to tell their stories, and have received much acclaim from not only their community, but others in the industry. Still, while strides have been made, trans performers continue to navigate through other stigmas and barriers present in other parts of the industry and society at-large.

In this podcast episode, “Trans Performers, Breaking Barriers and Stopping the Hate,” hosts SAG-AFTRA President Gabrielle Carteris and National Executive Director David White interview trangender performers Alexandra Grey (Transparent, MacGyver) and Ian Harvie (Transparent). Grey and Harvie discuss their personal and professional journeys as trans people and performers, their experiences during this moment in the industry and the responsibility they feel in representing their communities accurately and honestly.

This episode is presented as part of SAG-AFTRA’s Stop the Hate Week, an initiative to examine and combat issues marginalized communities face across the industry and the shifts needed to create necessary, long-lasting change.
