In 1967, the state of Oregon recognized that filmed entertainment was going to be a viable economic driver in Oregon and so created the Governor’s Office of Film & Television, now branded Oregon Film. For fifty years, Oregon Film has been blowing Oregon’s horn as the place for gorgeous scenery of every type, great actors and professional crews. SAG-AFTRA and its legacy predecessors are proud of the part its members have played in keeping that reputation for excellence solid and growing.

This spring, we’re proud to have Angie Tribeca and American Vandal shooting in Oregon. The Librarians has, sadly, been canceled but producer Dean Devlin assures us he’s looking for another outlet for the show, so all digits crossed for his — and our — continued good fortune with that show.

Two pilots are pinning their hopes on that special Oregon brand of magic, Staties and Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionist. A short theatrical project has an intriguing title: Malignant. That’s just a sampling of the student, theatrical, TV and new media projects that SAG-AFTRA signs up every single week. It’s an exciting time to be a SAG-AFTRA member in Oregon.

There are film festivals in every corner of the state, but a highlight is always POWfest.  The Portland Oregon Women’s Film Festival rolled out a stellar lineup highlighting the work of women in film. The 2018 Guest of Honor, Oscar-winner Barbara Kopple, spoke about her career on a night that showcased two of her powerful documentaries, Harlan County U.S.A and Miss Sharon Jones.

This year has already seen a number of festivals such as the Portland International Film Festival, The U of O Queer Film Festival and the McMinnville Short Film Festival. Other festivals to check out this spring: DisOrient - Asian American Film Festival of Oregon; Portland Jewish Film Festival; Eugene International Film Festival; QDoc: Portland Queer Documentary Film Festival; and the Ashland Independent Film Festival.

Don’t forget to check out some of these great made-in-Oregon films when it’s movie night at your house: Paint Your Wagon; Sometimes a Great Notion; Drugstore Cowboy; Shattered; Meek’s Cutoff; The Watchman’s Canoe — and that’s just one from each decade!

And join us in the theater for the shot-in-Portland thriller Bad Samaritan, opening in May.
