"If you are looking for ways to create your own opportunities by producing content in a variety of ways, SAG-AFTRA has a whole menu of contracts for just about anything imaginable, with budgets ranging from large to tiny.,” said Tom Schuch, SAG-AFTRA New Mexico Local Board member and Organizing Committee chair. "If you are motivated by creating your own work, there is no reason to wait. The union has found ways to streamline the signatory and contract process to give you more time to produce your art."

Schuch provided this list of some of the low-budget entertainment contracts followed by a short description of each. Please visit the SAG-AFTRA website for a full description of qualifying terms, rates and use limitations by contract.

Remember that any production must follow COVID-safe practices and guidelines that are spelled out on the SAG-AFTRA website.

- Low Budget Theatrical Agreement - Applies to live-action films shooting entirely within the United States with a total budget between $700,000 and $2 million and with an 80-minute minimum run time. This is for use by true made-for-theatrical projects only. The Diversity in Casting Incentive is offered under this agreement.

- Moderate Low Budget Project Agreement - Applies to theatrical or TV/new media projects shooting entirely in the United States with a budget that falls above $300,000 and with a ceiling of $700,000. There are no run time requirements. This agreement also offers a diversity incentive.

- Ultra Low Budget Project Agreement - Has similar exhibition parameters as the Moderate Low Budget, but applies to projects with a budget of $300,000 or less. Producers are required to cover all professional performers under the contract.

- Short Project Agreement - Applies to projects shooting entirely in the United States with a maximum total budget of $50,000 and a maximum total run time of 40 minutes. Note that this does not apply to episodic nor animated projects. Rates are negotiable and the contract allows for deferred payment.

- “NEW” Micro-Budget Project Agreement - This streamlines the signatory process for live-action entertainment-based projects budgeted at $20,000 or less per picture or episode, and allows for negotiable terms, making it an efficient option for projects that need a fast turnaround. If a project qualifies for Micro, it can be cleared to start immediately upon submission of an online application. Nudity, simulated sex or hazardous stunts are not permissible. This agreement does not create eligibility to join the union.

"And, don’t forget about commercials! New Mexico has its very own regional contract with extremely competitive rates called the 2019 New Mexico Regional Commercials Code.” added Schuch. "This contract is great for local New Mexico businesses that want to target consumers in New Mexico and adjacent states. So, if you know of businesses looking to advertise on television, radio or the internet, this contract is a great option."

Get out there and create content! Don’t wait!
