Los Angeles (August 21, 2007) – Actor Robert Guillaume became the fifth recipient of the Ivy Bethune Tri-Union Diversity Award on August 20. The Equal Ethnic Opportunities committees of Screen Actors Guild, the Actors Equity Association and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists jointly selected the Tony and Emmy award-winning actor for his work both on and off screen.
The three unions hosted the annual presentation at the East West Players Theatre in Downtown Los Angeles. Fellow television veteran and former Screen Actors Guild president Ed Asner was on hand to make the presentation to Guillaume.
Emceed by KTLA newscaster Michaela Perreira, the focus for this year’s event was “Bridge Builders,” acknowledging those who reach out into the community “to create opportunity and alternatives, sharing our common stories and celebrating our differences.”
The EEO committees sponsor this annual award to recognize and show appreciation for those who helped build a foundation for diversity in the entertainment industry. This member-driven award commends individuals and organizations that have taken an active stand to make a more representational, multicultural community in the performing arts and broadcasting.
In 2005, the award was formally named for Ivy Bethune, a member of all three unions who has devoted more than 80 years to civil rights and equal opportunity. Previous honorees were Ossie Davis, lyricist E Yip Harburg, Will Sampson, Edward James Olmos and newscaster Beverly White.
