SAG-AFTRA and the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media co-hosted a special screening of This Changes Everything and a Q&A panel in front of nearly 200 guests at the Paley Center for Media on Nov. 12. SAG-AFTRA President Gabrielle Carteris, SAG-AFTRA Executive Vice President and New York Local President Rebecca Damon, and Madeline di Nonno, the Institute’s CEO and producer of the film, delivered brief remarks and introduced the feature documentary. The film illuminates a disparity that continues to plague Hollywood: the underrepresentation and misrepresentation of women in entertainment, both behind and in front of the camera. The film interviewed a plethora of female and male power players, including Carteris, Institute founder Geena Davis, Meryl Streep, Lena Dunham, Jessica Chastain, Cate Blanchett, Judd Apatow, Alan Alda, Shonda Rhimes, Patty Jenkins and Maria Giese, among others.

Following the film, di Nonno moderated a panel consisting of Carteris; Orange is the New Black’s Jackie Cruz, also in the film; and director Tom Donahue. Carteris and Cruz both elaborated on their personal experiences of gender bias in their careers and offered recommendations for effecting change in the male-dominated industry. Donahue noted his responsibility as a male director to speak up on behalf of his female counterparts and affirmed his belief that true change is not possible if men do not take a stand on the issue. The event concluded with a brief Q&A session with the audience.
