SAG-AFTRA mourns the passing of legendary recording artist Bill Withers, who died March 30 at the age of 81. The Grammy Award-winning singer joined the union in 1967, and many of his songs can be counted among America’s best-loved standards, including Lean on Me, Just the Two of Us, Lovely Day and Ain’t No Sunshine.
"Bill Withers was tremendously talented, a masterful songwriter and soulful singer," said SAG-AFTRA President Gabrielle Carteris. "His music not only brought endless joy, but also connected people everywhere, making a real difference in the world. His mark is indelible and he will be missed."
Lean on Me has provided succor to many during the coronavirus crisis, with many people across the nation performing it on front porches, online and even on the Today show.
The union extends its deepest condolences to his family and friends.
