Two new national committees were established by the National Board at its regularly scheduled meeting on Oct. 15 following the 2019 SAG-AFTRA National Convention. The new committees, Innovation & New Technology and NextGen Performers (NGP), reflect the union’s commitment to evolving to meet the changing needs of its modern membership.

The Innovation & New Technology Committee formalizes the union’s numerous initiatives to address the use of technology in the entertainment and media industries. Some of the issues it will tackle include the proliferation of streaming services, the rise of “deepfake” videos and ensuring performers are protected and compensated fairly when new technology poses a threat to their privacy or rights of publicity.

The NextGen Performers Committee builds off the work and efforts of existing local NGP committees already active throughout the national membership. The NGP’s mission is to develop, serve and connect the emerging generation of SAG-AFTRA membership through social, networking and community outreach initiatives.
