Award-winning actor Jim Piddock, right, talks with WSJ reporter Erich Schwartzel about his life and accomplishments on Jan. 12 at SAG-AFTRA Plaza.
The Industry Relations department kicked off the new year with two more great events in its Let’s Talk About It: #InsideTheIndustry series led by host and entertainment reporter Erich Schwartzel of The Wall Street Journal.
On Jan. 12, the improvisational skills of multi-hyphenate actor, comedian, screenwriter and producer Jim Piddock were well on display as he kept an overflowing audience rapt with side-splitting stories of his 30-plus years in the business. He discussed his career, from his crazy days as a young out-of-work actor in the United Kingdom, sneaking in and leaving his resume on the desks of important people at the BBC, to his most recent work as co-writer, co-producer and co-star on Mascots, which was released on Netflix in 2016. Jim’s breadth of talent as both a comedic and dramatic actor and as a multifaceted screenwriter, his wicked sense of humor and tenacity have carried him far, and during this event he encouraged other SAG-AFTRA members to follow suit.

Not quite a month later on Feb. 8, DEFY Media CEO Keith Richman, along with DEFY stars and YouTube sensations Andy Signore and Joslyn Davis, discussed the rise and development of their digital media and entertainment company, which produces, owns and distributes millennial content. The DEFY trio shared anecdotes of their experiences and how they created their platform and brands, such as ScreenJunkies, Man at Arms and ClevverTV, aimed at the 13–34-year-old demographic.
