Industry leaders, artists and influencers discuss hip-hop in the age of streaming services and social justice movements.

SAG-AFTRA National Executive Director Duncan Crabtree-Ireland was a panelist at the Universal Hip Hop Museum’s The State of Black Music: The Artist, The Executive, The Influencer on June 24. The discussion was part of a two-day event and took place at the historic Miracle Theatre in Inglewood, California. 

Other panelists included UHHM Artist Relations Committee and Advisory Board member Tina Marie Tyler; Warner Records Executive Vice President, Urban Music & Marketing, Chris Atlas; The Authenticated Chief Executive Officer and founder James Andrews; AMP Global Technologies Advisor and Rockstar Entertainment Manager Marc Byers; Family Tree Entertainment Chief Executive Officer and founder Michael “Blue” Williams; and Rite 1 Enterprises Executive Director Sonya Pruneda. Radio/television host and choreographer Leslie “Big Lez” Segar (Be Inspired: The Life of Heavy D) moderated. 

Together, the group discussed hip-hop’s evolution, from its Golden Age in the 1990s to its continued influence in pop culture today. Also discussed was the state of Black music in the wake of the pandemic and its importance in today’s social climate.
