Members of SAG-AFTRA L.A. Local joined more than 45,000 teachers, educational workers, families and other allies at the United for L.A. Schools Rally at Grand Park on March 15 to stand in solidarity with fellow union members. The rally was organized to show support for Los Angeles educators from the United Teachers of Los Angeles and Service Employees International Union Local 99, and to put pressure on the Los Angeles School District and the Los Angeles superintendent to invest in students, the families impacted by the district and educators.
This rally comes after 10 months and 22 bargaining sessions between SEIU Local 99 — which represents bus drivers, custodians, cafeteria workers, special education assistants and other essential educational workers — and the Los Angeles superintendent.
Workers’ top issues include wage increases to retain and attract new educators so that schools can be fully staffed, smaller class sizes in every grade and smaller caseloads in special education. The rally also highlighted the lack of funding for community schools and Black student achievement programs.
SAG-AFTRA strives to support other unions that help to make our communities what they are. To learn more and support the cause, you can go to United Teachers Los Angeles and SEIU Local 99.
