LOS ANGELES — A picture is worth a thousand words, and today SAG-AFTRA announced a partnership with famed cartoonist Lalo Alcaraz targeting Spanish Broadcasting System (SBS), one of the largest Hispanic-owned media companies in the United States.
Alcaraz is the author of the comic La Cucaracha, the first nationally syndicated, politically themed Latino daily comic strip. For the partnership, Alcaraz created a series of cartoons that will be released in the coming weeks to escalate pressure on SBS. The first piece, made public today, depicts SBS CEO Raúl Alarcón Jr. holding a whip while riding on the back of an SBS employee. To download a hi-res image of the cartoon, click here.
“SBS continues to advertise its high ratings and revenue growth, which have been gained on the backs of talented media professionals. In Los Angeles, SBS is proposing double-digit wage decreases for its on-air talent, many of whom are paid close to if not minimum wage. To boot, they have endured unlawful terminations, retaliation, denial of talent fees and furloughs during the holidays.
“Enough is enough. Our members are key to the company’s growth and deserve respect, fair wages and dignity in the workplace. They deserve a fair contract now,” said SAG-AFTRA President Gabrielle Carteris.
“I am excited to support the SBS unit members, who are fighting for living wages and respect, through my art. I’ve always stood up for the voiceless, for justice, and that activism is reflected in the debut cartoon and the rest of the series,” said cartoonist Lalo Alcaraz.
For more than three years, SBS has continually violated labor laws. Consequently, the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) has issued three significant complaints against the company for its bad-faith bargaining and retaliation for union activity. A trial is set on March 30, 2020 for SBS’ most recent unlawful conduct of rescinding compensation for employees’ endorsement work without first notifying and bargaining with the union and in retaliation for employees’ union activities.
In 2016, Los Angeles SBS employees at Mega 96.3 and La Raza 97.9 overwhelmingly voted to join SAG-AFTRA and, since then, SBS has continued to violate federal law by engaging in over 100 separate unfair labor practices, including a refusal to bargain in good faith. In 2017, on-air and off-air employees were wrongfully terminated (and later reinstated thanks to SAG AFTRA’s strong advocacy and an imminent NLRB trial), and are still poorly paid and denied basic workers’ rights. SBS continues to propose wage cuts after three years of negotiations. In 2018, Chicago SBS station (WLEY-FM “La Ley 107.9”) also voted to join SAG-AFTRA, but has not reached an agreement with management.

SAG-AFTRA se Asocia con el Reconocido Dibujante Lalo Alcaraz, Lanza Serie de Caricaturas Dirigida a Spanish Broadcasting System
LOS ÁNGELES - Una imagen vale más que mil palabras, y hoy SAG-AFTRA anunció su colaboración con el famoso dibujante Lalo Alcaraz, dirigida al Spanish Broadcasting System (SBS), una de las compañías de medios hispanos más grandes en los Estados Unidos.
Alcaraz es el autor del cómic La Cucaracha, la primera tira cómica latina de temática política distribuida a nivel nacional. Para esta colaboración, Alcaraz creó una serie de caricaturas que serán lanzadas en las próximas semanas para aumentar la presión sobre SBS. La primera pieza, hecha pública hoy, muestra al CEO de SBS, Raúl Alarcón Jr., sosteniendo un látigo mientras va montando en la espalda de un empleado de SBS. “SBS continúa anunciando sus altos ratings y crecimiento de ingresos, que han ganado gracias a sus talentosos profesionales de los medios. En Los Ángeles, SBS está proponiendo reducciones salariales de dos dígitos para su talento al aire, a muchos de los cuales se les paga cerca de, si no el salario mínimo. Para empezar, han sufrido despidos ilegales, represalias, denegación de pagos por promociones del talento y descansos sin pago durante las fiestas.
"¡Ya es suficiente! Nuestros miembros son clave para el crecimiento de la empresa y merecen respeto, salarios justos y dignidad en el lugar de trabajo. Se merecen un contrato justo ahora”, dijo la presidenta de SAG-AFTRA, Gabrielle Carteris.
“Estoy muy emocionado de apoyar a los miembros de la unidad de SBS, que luchan por salarios dignos y respeto, a través de mi arte. Siempre he defendido a los que no tienen voz, a la justicia, y ese activismo se refleja en esta caricatura inicial y en el resto de la serie ", dijo el dibujante Lalo Alcaraz.
Por más de tres años, SBS ha violado continuamente las leyes laborales. Por lo tanto, la Junta Nacional de Relaciones Laborales (NLRB) ha emitido tres quejas importantes contra la empresa por su negociación de mala fe y represalias por actividades sindicales. El 30 de marzo de 2020 se realizará un juicio por la conducta ilegal más reciente de SBS de rescindir la compensación por promociones realizadas por los empleados sin primero notificar y negociar con el sindicato, y en represalia por las actividades sindicales de los empleados.
En 2016, los empleados de Los Ángeles SBS en Mega 96.3 y La Raza 97.9 votaron por una mayoria aplastante a unirse a SAG-AFTRA y, desde entonces, SBS ha continuado violando la ley federal al participar en más de 100 prácticas laborales injustas, incluyendo la negativa a negociar de buena fe. En 2017, los empleados al aire y fuera del aire fueron despedidos injustamente (y luego reincorporados gracias a la fuerte lucha de SAG AFTRA y un inminente juicio de la NLRB), y todavía son mal pagados y se les niegan los derechos básicos de los trabajadores.
