By and large, the employment laws in this country don’t protect contractors or gig workers … It’s important for legislators to understand that, increasingly, people aren’t just simply classified as employees anymore, and they have an obligation to make sure that there are laws that protect all workers in this country.

National Employment Law Project Government Affairs Director

On March 27, Congress passed the Economic Security (CARES) Act in response to the economic turmoil the country is facing from the COVID-19 pandemic. The bipartisan bill offers an unprecedented $2 trillion in relief to businesses, individuals and organizations in the public and private sectors. Thanks to the lobbying efforts of SAG-AFTRA and its allies, many performers whose productions have shut down will be eligible to receive this form of aid.

An organization that helped play an integral role in the development of the bill was the National Employment Law Project, a nationally based nonprofit organization that advocates for livable wages and the creation of jobs and unemployment programs for workers across all industries. In this week’s podcast episode, SAG-AFTRA President Gabrielle Carteris and National Executive Director David White speak with NELP’s Government Affairs Director Judy Conti about the CARES Act and the assistance it offers to the unemployed. Throughout the episode, Conti discusses details about the new stimulus bill’s programs and benefits to unemployed workers and answers questions about how those seeking help can apply for aid in the coming weeks.
