Headshot of Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez, District 80

California Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez discusses how the FAIR Act introduces new changes for performers and the industry at large.

I was in the labor movement before I came into office … [and] I came as a labor advocate. It doesn’t matter what kind of job you’re in, every worker needs a voice in the workplace and the ability to stand up for themselves.

California Assemblywoman, District 80

SAG-AFTRA and the Music Artists Coalition are asking their members, all creators and labor allies to support the Free Artists from Industry Restrictions Act. If passed, the FAIR Act, or AB 1385, will prohibit existing options and exclusivity clauses that bar television and new media actors from working between show seasons and prohibit recording artists from being stuck in record deals well beyond seven years. Championing the FAIR Act is its author, California Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez, D-San Diego, a longtime advocate of workers’ rights with a labor movement background.

Gonzalez speaks with SAG-AFTRA podcast hosts President Gabrielle Carteris and National Executive Director David White about the FAIR Act’s development, benefits and the ways it stands to change old business practices for California performers industry wide.
