“[Deepfake] technology is accelerating at such a rapid pace that it’s hard to keep up with and therefore it’s easy to ignore. And that’s part of danger of what we’re looking at.”

--David White, SAG-AFTRA National Executive Director

As technology evolves, the world of science fiction is ever closer to becoming reality. Sophisticated but increasingly affordable software is being used to create all new performances from beloved performers, both living and deceased, and the results can be seen in summer blockbusters, Super Bowl commercials and Coachella performances. But with the rise of this type of technology comes the growth and proliferation of “deepfakes,” videos that convincingly place the image of a performer’s face onto another person’s body. Deepfakes are now being used to create pornographic videos and fake videos featuring world leaders.

SAG-AFTRA Executive Vice President and New York Local President Rebecca Damon joins President Gabrielle Carteris and National Executive Director David White in this episode of the podcast to discuss these technologies and how the union is working to ensure members’ protection through contract provisions and right-of-publicity laws.

Soon after this recording, California state Sen. Connie Leyva introduced SB564, some of the first legislation in the country to ban the creation and dissemination of nonconsensual, digitally created sex scenes and nude performances.
