Members of the SAG-AFTRA National Innovation and New Technology and A.I. Task Force Committees share their experiences from the world’s largest technology showcase.
This was my first time attending CES, and one of the biggest takeaways is there doesn’t seem to be a big emphasis on where the power is [being] derived to run these massive systems … and where they’re getting their training data from. I was really floored by the fact that the majority of people feel like it’s a free-for-all: That they’re welcome to scrape anything they can find on the Internet or YouTube. … The work we’re doing with our sister unions really is something we need to continue to build and focus on.

SAG-AFTRA National Innovation and New Technology Committee Vice Chair and A.I. Task Force Committee Chair
For the last several years, SAG-AFTRA has prioritized its attendance at CES, the world’s largest consumer tech exhibition. CES, held annually in Las Vegas, is a venue where companies showcase their latest inventions and innovations. For the union, it serves as a way for members to get a closer look at emerging technologies influencing the media landscape.
In this podcast episode, SAG-AFTRA Executive Vice President Linda Powell and National Executive Director & Chief Negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland are joined by members of the SAG-AFTRA National Innovation and New Technology Committee and A.I. Task Force Committee to talk about what they saw on the exhibition floor — from A.I.-powered robots to content authentication — and other observations. Together, they discuss the ethical questions generative A.I. continues to raise for the industry, and the union’s ongoing efforts to monitor and contribute to long-term solutions.
