You can’t teach someone who doesn’t have rhythm how to dance; it’s just in you or it’s not. And I think puppetry’s the same way where you feel it click and understand it, or you don’t.
John Tartaglia
Veteran Puppeteer
It’s not often that we think about how puppets (or Muppets) have played a role in our lives and how their influence and impact goes beyond teaching us our letters and numbers, but whether they’re on the stage or the screen, certain characters have become as familiar to us as our favorite real-life performers.
In this episode of the SAG-AFTRA podcast, we take a look at the lives and careers of the puppeteers who play an integral part in bringing beloved characters to life. Hosts SAG-AFTRA President Gabrielle Carteris and National Executive Director are joined by members and veteran puppeteers Jennifer Barnhart (Sesame Street, Avenue Q) and Tony Award-winner John Tartaglia (Avenue Q). Together, Barnhart and Tartaglia talk about the techniques and skills involved with puppetry and regale us with industry stories and their careers as union members. It’s an undoubtedly fun time, complete with lessons about various puppetry styles across cultures and history, puppetry’s popularity among audiences both young and young-at-heart, and clips from Fraggle Rock, Sesame Street, Avenue Q and more.
