Auditioning is really about [casting directors] learning about actors, and then deciding where they best fit. Don’t get caught up on a specific role; do your best work, show your best side and know that we’re taking that information in.

Kim Williams

Disney Television Studios Vice President of Casting and Casting Society of America President

COVID-19 has brought many changes to the auditioning process. In addition to self-taping being more commonplace, many casting directors are now using teleconference platforms as a means of recreating the feel of in-person auditions. But what do these shifts mean for an industry working to adjust to a “new normal,” and what are the long-term implications for performers and casting directors?

Disney Television Studios Vice President of Casting and newly elected Casting Society of America President Kim Williams joins podcast hosts SAG-AFTRA President Gabrielle Carteris and National Executive Director Duncan Crabtree-Ireland to talk about auditioning in a rebounding industry. Williams discusses self-taping and virtual audition tips for performers from the casting director’s perspective, and notes how increased focus on diversity, equity and inclusion can bring changes to what we see in the media.
