What I find is that it’s a lot harder to wade through projects to determine what is going to be worth doing. There is so much content … and everything feels a bit riskier in terms of, ‘Is this something that will even ever be seen?’

Streamed content continues to change the way television and films are produced, released and consumed by today’s audiences. And in some ways, it’s a boon for consumers: A canceled network show can find a new home in the digital space, and pivotal moments can be rewatched an infinite number of times or paused or abandoned for something else.

But what are some of the long-term challenges industry professionals and creatives face in light of more online content and emerging platforms backed by studio conglomerates?

SAG-AFTRA posed these questions at the Streaming and the Changing Business Model panel on March 12. The panel took place as part of the 2022 SXSW Conference and Festival and featured SAG-AFTRA Chief Contracts Officer Ray Rodriguez, actor Ginnifer Goodwin and producer Michelle Lang as panelists, with SAG-AFTRA National Executive Director Duncan Crabtree-Ireland moderating. Listen to this episode to hear the group’s thoughts on how rising trends and streaming service algorithms stand to change what we see on the screen.
