“If you want to get involved, get involved! It’s going to benefit you endlessly, just as it’s done for me.”

Performers in their 20s and 30s face big challenges in building lasting careers in entertainment and media. It’s not enough to simply be talented or like your work. Creating opportunities between gigs, practicing self-care and learning how to advocate for yourself on and off set are just some of the crucial skills needed to survive — and thrive. But this is easier said than done.

How can emerging performers take control of their careers and make meaningful progress? One answer is through community, and one of the most active communities within the union is the NextGen Performers Committee. Whether on a national or local level, NGP committees are an important resource for community-building, networking, professional growth and advocacy work.

SAG-AFTRA National Executive Director & Chief Negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland talks about the work of the NextGen Performers Committee with actor-producer and National NextGen Performers Committee Chair Sarah Seeds, and actor and model Anastasia Camos, a member of the Los Angeles NGP Committee. Seeds and Camos share their experiences as young professionals and offer some practical, real-world advice on self-advocacy, collaboration, work-life balance and mental health.
