The podcast deep-dives into the influence of self-taped auditions on the industry.
I’d love to think Zoom auditions and the self-tapes are going to go away and [we’ll go] back to the old days. But, I don’t know if that’s true; I suspect it’s not. So let’s just take this on as … another step in exploring our artistry and getting as many eyes on our performances as we can.
Michelle Hurd
SAG-AFTRA Vice President, Los Angeles
Self-taped auditions have evolved from a pre-pandemic convenience to a standard industry practice. For some performers, self-taping offers a sense of control and ownership of their audition and the process overall; for others, it’s added a level of anxiety and presented new challenges with technology. But whether you love or hate self-taping, what has become an important priority is ensuring that self-taped auditions happen safely and allow performers can let their best work shine through.
The SAG-AFTRA President’s Task Force on Education, Outreach & Engagement has led many discussions about self-taping and its influence on the audition process. The SAG-AFTRA podcast continues this conversation with its replay of the latest PTEOE livestream, Spotlight on Self-Tapes. First aired on July 28, it features SAG-AFTRA Vice President Los Angeles, Michelle Hurd; Vice President, Actors/Performers William Charlton; and Vice President, Mid-Sized Locals Michele Proude discussing their first-hand experiences with self-taping over the last two years and offering advice on troubleshooting common self-taping problems. The livestream also delves into new provisions in the 2022 Commercials Contracts that place new safety standards on self-taping.
Episode introduction by SAG-AFTRA Executive Vice President Ben Whitehair and National Executive Director Duncan Crabtree-Ireland.
