One friend said to me, ‘Steve, you had such a successful career. Why would you want to cover something as unsexy as labor?’ And I said, ‘You’re wrong! There are millions of workers in America and they have tons of great stories.’

Steven Greenhouse

Author, ‘Beaten Down, Worked Up: the Past, Present, and Future of American Labor’

Steven Greenhouse is a name every unionist should know. Getting his start at The New York Times, Greenhouse spent nearly two decades covering labor and workplace issues on a national and international scale. Prior to his retirement from the publication in 2014, his debut novel, The Big Squeeze: Tough Times for the American Worker, earned him the Hillman Prize. He also was the recipient of several journalism awards from the Society of Professional Journalists Deadline Club and New York Press Club.

Podcast hosts SAG-AFTRA President Gabrielle Carteris and National Executive Director David White met with Greenhouse to discuss the state of today’s labor movement. Greenhouse analyzes the evolution of the movement and the changes unions and workers have experienced, from the New Deal through President Ronald Reagan’s administration to the resurgence of grassroots strike efforts taking place across the country. He also talks about his latest book, Beaten Down, Worked Up: The Past, Present, and Future of American Labor.
