To have the labor movement en masse at [CES] is so important because we need to be injecting workers’ voices and perspectives into [discussions] on the technology that’s going to be disrupting every type of job we see in the economy. We must have a seat at the table and bring together the powerful voices of workers into those rooms.

Liz Shuler

AFL-CIO President

SAG-AFTRA, alongside the AFL-CIO and AFL-CIO Tech Institute, convened in Las Vegas, Jan. 9-10 for the 5th Annual Labor Innovation & Technology Summit. The LIT Summit, which coincides with CES, the world’s largest technology showcase, has become known for bringing together labor movement leaders, entertainment workers, policy makers and other subject-matter experts to discuss technology’s effect on labor and society.

This episode looks at some of the most impactful discussions from the 2024 summit. AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler shares her thoughts on the longstanding impact of emerging technologies on work and the continued need for innovations to be met with worker-centric advocacy and policies.

Also highlighted are powerful quotes from noted guest speakers across four panels:

  • American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten (Worker Rights in the Age of Tech);
  • Teamsters Motion Picture Division Director & Western Region Vice President Lindsay Dougherty (A.I. Goes to Hollywood 2024);
  • AFL-CIO Secretary-Treasurer Fred Redmond (Technology in the Face of Worker and Civil Rights);
  • UNITE HERE Local 226-Culinary Workers Union Executive Board member and Mandala Bay Guest Room Attendant Elena Newman (When Workers Fight, We Win!).

Episode introduction by SAG-AFTRA National Executive Director Duncan Crabtree-Ireland. The full Jan. 9 itinerary is available on the SAG-AFTRA YouTube channel and sagaftra.org/videos
