SAG-AFTRA President Gabrielle Carteris made her debut on The Hollywood Reporter’s Women in Entertainment Power 100 List this week and helped honor a group of mentees at the magazine’s annual industry breakfast Wednesday.
SAG-AFTRA was one of the sponsors of the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Los Angeles mentorship program, providing Macy’s gift cards to 36 young women this year. As part of the program, union staff packed branded backpacks with school supplies and items from MAC Cosmetics, DC Entertainment and Postmates, which Carteris and SAG-AFTRA National Executive Director David White presented to the mentees backstage at the 25th annual Women in Entertainment breakfast.
Carteris was among those honored at the industry event, which included a keynote speech by broadcaster Megyn Kelly and the presentation of the Sherry Lansing Leadership Award, which recognizes a female pioneer in the entertainment industry, to Tina Fey.
“It’s an honor to be included on THR’s Power 100 list and to be a part of this great celebration of female leadership in entertainment and media,” said Carteris. “I also want to congratulate the 2016 and 2017 mentee classes. They have worked so hard to meet the challenges of this terrific leadership development program. These young women’s enthusiasm to learn and grow will lead to a brighter and more promising future for us all.”
White noted the importance of the mentorship program to SAG-AFTRA.
“We are so proud of our President for being recognized and very pleased to be a sponsor of The Hollywood Reporter Women in Entertainment Mentor Program. It is an extraordinary effort and fits with SAG-AFTRA’s institutional commitment to fostering the next generation of industry storytellers,” said White. "There’s no single route to success in this industry, and SAG-AFTRA wants to make sure we help open as many doors as possible.”
Also attending THR’s breakfast were SAG-AFTRA Executive Vice President Rebecca Damon, Secretary-Treasurer Jane Austin, Chief Communications & Marketing Officer Pamela Greenwalt, SAG Awards Executive Producer Kathy Connell and Los Angeles Local Executive Director Ilyanne Morden Kichaven.
